Biosafety-related Issues:

NYSDEC has posted a revision to the existing Part 360 for public comment. Part 360 contains regulations for handling biohazard waste and waste management facilities. You can find the revision at the DEC website: http://www.dec.ny.gov/regulations/81768.html. Comments will be accepted until July 15, 2016.

Beginning April 15, 2016, NSF-accredited field certifiers shall no longer certify any direct-connected Type A BSCs (at all) and all canopy-connected Type A BSCs must have an exhaust airflow alarm.

For type A BSC’s

  • Class A BSCs that are not hooked up to exterior ventilation (i.e. recirculate in the room) are fine and do not fall under the scope of this notice.
  • Class A BSCs that are direct connected to exterior ventilation will NOT be recertified after April 15th 2016 (no matter if alarmed or not)
  • Class A BSCs that are canopy connected must have an alarm added before they will be recertified after April 15th 2016
  • Class B BSCs do not fall under the scope of this notice.
